Cultural_Capital includes recipes and protocols for participation that mark the parameters of the project and which provide a means through which curators and guests are able to ‘care for’ the sourdough without our being there to oversee the process. The work includes protocols for hosting an event and documenting the process, as well as recipes for making bread.
As glorious ninth we have devised, enacted and performed a number of ‘everyday performances’ such as preparing a love potion (love_potion 2005); collectively welcoming the change of season from summer to winter (November, 2006) and growing flowers throughout the year as a ritual of mourning (Tending, 2004). In all of these works, attention was given to finding ways to make the parameters of the performances ‘portable’ through the use of protocol as a medium. In this way everyday performances can be enacted, installed and performed by curators and guests in private residences, work-spaces, gardens, communal spaces and galleries. Guests and curators choose whether to, how to, and which aspects of their performances to document and share with others. Protocol, then, is a medium through which the parameters, rhythm and dynamic of the everyday performance are distributed.
